Quickly dressing, then slipped downstairs with the postcard in hand, moving silently. Putting the shoes on then grabbed the umbrella from the rack. Creeping to the back door, the cold night air greeted the quiet exit. Two deep breaths of fresh air were taken, eyes lingering on the falling raindrops for a moment before stepping out from under the eaves. A few steps in, a foot slid in a muddy puddle, nearly causing a fall.
"Goddamn it!" came a hushed curse, followed by an attempt to shake the mud off the shoe.
The mud clung stubbornly, so the effort was abandoned. Stepping out of the small swamp, the path continued to the gate. It was swung open, and the street lay ahead.

People were dying, blood splattered on their clothes, but they just kept going, marching, and hoping to reach a place where it would all finally end, where they wouldn't have to fall asleep with the thought that they might never wake up again.
